Personal Thoughts: I'm not into American horror movies as much as I used to be. Mostly because they just steal from one another and are pretty predictable. When I saw the trailer for this film something just caught my attention. There was a bit of a Ring feel to it but it looked like it could have a few different twists. I wasn't sure if I was watching the correct movie at first because it started off with the visual texture of an 80s slasher film. Then the movie actually started.
The writers broke it down into three parts which gave the movie a refreshing angle. The first act was your standard horror film. People start getting killed and you expect the boogie man behind every corner. Then act two kicks in and the movie takes a satirical twist and brings in a lot of dark humor. I actually laughed through this third of the movie because of how ridiculous and twisted it was. If you saw Hot Fuzz and laughed when Simon Pegg kicked that old lady in the face then you would laugh at this portion too.
The third act went back to a more serious tone with a bit a 28 Day Later type feel. It was this portion of the movie where people started to try and figure out what was really happening and find a way to move on with their lives. Not the typical ending to a horror flick.
Recommend?: Worth a once see for its multiple approaches to a classic genre.
