This book is rather difficult to explain. Miller takes a topic, like Romance or Problems, throws in a few anecdotal stories that makes you wonder where he is going and then amazingly ties it to a biblical truth. It is not a doctrinal work yet it is doctrinal and often quite deep. It is also very conversational in tone and Miller never comes across as though he has it all together.
I already put a bit of my review in the synopsis so look up there if you just wanted to know my thoughts. I picked this book up because I had heard so many good things about it. I also heard that it was controversial so I figured that there would be some shady theology or something inside. Instead what I found was a book written by a guy who is still figuring things out. He is willing to hang his dirty laundry for people to see and is not afraid to say "crap" or admit that he sometimes likes hanging out with non-Christians. He had the audacity (sarcasm there) to point out that there are some non-Christians who are loving and happy with their lives.
I do not want to say that Miller is a modern C.S Lewis but his ability to take a deep topic and break it out in a simple, conversational style reminded me of Mere Christianity. There were portions of the book that I had to think about for several days after reading it. His chapter on Alone was probably one of the hardest hitting for me. It was if he was describing my outlook and situation...and the dangers of it.
I would certainly recommend this book to believers of any level. It is challenging and encouraging at the same time. However, I do not know if I would recommend giving it to a non-believer. Yes, there is a lot in the book that non-believers can connect with but I can't think of any real strong gospel presentation. I'm not even sure how many questions would be raised. C.S Lewis made clear statements in Mere Christianity about Jesus. While Miller does say he believes Jesus is God I felt like a non-believer could walk away from the book thinking it is also okay to think of Jesus as a good teacher. If I am wrong please let me know.
