Atonement

Genre: Drama

Starring: James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Saoirse Ronan, Brenda Blethyn, Vanessa Redgrave

Rated: R (disturbing war images, language and some sexuality)

Length: 120 minutes

Plot: A 13 year old girl in 1940 Britain misinterprets a series of events she witnesses and in the end falsely accuses a young man in her families service for a crime. The movie traces her growth through the process as she comes to understand the implications of what she did.

Personal Thoughts: I think that everyone has some event in their life which they wish they could take back. Whether someone was hurt in the process or just the change of perspective as one grows older, we all have some event we wish could be changed. This is where the movie succeeded. It took something we can all relate to and showed how many people spend large portions of their lives trying to make up for those moments.

The theme was not the only good thing about the movie. The storytelling was also brilliantly done. Each portion of the movie was shown from two perspectives. 1) From the 13 year old outside the situation and then 2) from inside the event itself. While this method may seem redundant it worked very well. I could understand how the girl misinterpreted the events and the confusion that resulted.

Recommend?: Absolutely. This is one movie I will buy.
