There is a new ad out by MoveOn.org. It is a heart wrenching ad with a young mother telling John McCain that he can't have her son as part of his willingness to stay in Iraq for 100 years. Here is the ad.
Now, this ad really pisses me off. When I first saw it my blood started to boil. Not because it is poorly made. It is a phenomenal piece of propaganda as it hits all the parents out there who worry about their kids. But here is where it messes up. It is not John McCain's choice as to whether that kid joins the military in 18-20 years. It is her son's choice.
Michael Moore tried to hit Bill O'Riley with the same point in an interview when he asked O'Riley if he would be willing to send his son to die in Iraq. O'Riley didn't answer as forcefully as he could have but hit the point that it would not be his decision to send his son to war.
America's military is 100% volunteer. There is no draft. There is no conscription. Every single enlisted or commissioned service member went into their local recruiters and signed that paper and took the oath of service.
My Mother was worried for me when I enlisted but she recognized the fact that it was ultimately MY CHOICE. I was not coerced but went in with a clear conscience knowing what I was getting into.
I feel for the young parents who naturally do not what to see their kids go off to war. No parent wants that. At the same time, it is not the government or the parents who make the final decision. It is the choice of the individual. So, come on MoveOn.org, learn how your country operates before releasing an ad like this. All you are doing is misleading people.
